The Ferens Education Trust is a registered charity with an annual investment income of approximately £38K available per year, to fund projects which meet the objects of the Trust Deed. Generally projects are offered funding between £500 - £5,000 (although more or less can be applied for and offered). Projects can be “one off” or multi-annual (which must be stated at application). All projects are considered on individual merit.
The nine Trustees - members of staff and individuals external to the University - meet twice each year (usually November and June) to consider funding applications and receive reports on projects previously supported.
Projects should be able to demonstrate one or more of the following:
• Will enhance and improve the reputation of the University of Hull both locally and nationally;
• Are innovative (method/content/focus);
• Demonstrate a public benefit (eg seminars/activities which are open to members of the public or specific groups such as schools, health users/professionals, etc.);
• Are seeking initial pump-priming funding
• Aid the recruitment of students to the University of Hull from new areas, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, locally nationally and internationally.
Academic research activities (those not linked directly to public benefit) and conference costs are unlikely to be supported. Student projects must go beyond core-activities.
Project Financial Information
Each application must include a realistically costed budget. Please refer to the University’s Financial Regulations and Procedures for information.
Please consult your Faculty/Service Finance Officer if you require assistance in drawing up your budget.
Submission of Applications
Must be made on the application form, signed by the applicant, Head of Department/School and Dean of Faculty. Project information should be clear, concise and intelligible to a non-specialist audience and supported by clear budgetary information. Costings, timescales and outcomes should be realistic.

Receipt of Funding
Successful applicants should contact their Faculty/Service Finance Officer in order that a finance code can be created for the project. Funding will then be transferred into that code. You should liaise with your Faculty/Service Finance Officer to ensure that expenditure is recorded against the relevant budget code/s as a final expenditure summary will be required following project conclusion.
Conditions of Acceptance of Funding
(a) Funds must be used as described in the original application.
(b) Recognition of The Ferens Education Trust funding must be incorporated into any publicity; and any documents/materials produced to be lodged with the Trust Secretary.
(c) A brief written interim report (where applicable) and final report, including a final expenditure statement, must be provided to the Trustees on the outcome of the project. Failure to submit reports may adversely affect applications for future funding.
(d) Any part of the award that remains unspent within the year of allocation will be returned to the Trust unless otherwise agreed by the Trustees.
(e) All equipment purchased through the grant award will remain the sole property of the University, during and upon completion of the outlined project.
If you think that you may not spend all of the funding allocated please contact the Trust Secretary as soon as possible. In some instances, the underspend may be approved to fund a different activity associated with the project. If not, any funding unspent on project conclusion will be returned to the Trust.
