The work of the Trust reflects the concerns of Ann Watson who left a significant legacy in 1720. Ann Watson was a committed Christian and the Trust continues to reflect her values and has a desire to invest in the education of children and young people in Hull and East Riding. We award grants to the parents of children under the age of 18 who have educational needs which are not funded by statutory authorities.
Guidelines for awarding grants
1. Eligible schools, colleges or training organisations should be situated in Hull or the East Riding, and pupils must be under the age of 18 and in full time education or training.
2. Grants to clergy children for independent education require a clear statement as to why the parents/guardians are choosing to school their child(ren) in the independent sector and how they will benefit from this education.
3. Grants are made on the basis of need up to one third of the annual tuition fees and other essential costs.
4. Grants to other children in independent education are only made in emergency situations and in the GCSE or A level years. These are limited to one third of annual tuition fees (pro rata per term) and other essential costs. Support from the school is required with Clerical endorsement if possible, otherwise endorsement from a community, social or group leader, who knows the child. This may be waived at the discretion of the Trustees.
5. Grants may be awarded for equipment and other items or support not provided by any statutory authority e.g. for IT equipment, musical instruments and sports equipment. The Trustees may consider matched funding. The maximum grant is £2,500.
6. Grants may be awarded to exceptionally gifted children to attend courses of study or extra-curricular tuition in music, visual or performing arts, sport or languages, up to one third of the annual tuition fees and other essential costs.
7. Applications are means tested and will require a summary of the parent/guardian’s financial circumstances which will guide the Trustees in their decision making.
8. Depending on parental income or in exceptional circumstances at the Trustees absolute discretion grants may be increased from one third to one half of annual tuition costs and other essential costs.
9. Trustees require a short (annual) report from either the parent or young person on the successful utilisation of any grant.
